Album de famille
2011
Chapitre 1, dvd video, 18’57’’, Chapitre 2, dvd video, 17’54’’,
Chapitre 3, dvd video, 11’03’’, Chapitre 4, dvd video, 23’34’’
All the four videos show a diapositive projection created by the artist’s father during the ‘70s and ‘90s. Each video has a different narrator :
Chapter 1 is commented by the photographer ; Chapter 2 is commented by the artist’s mother ; Chapter 3 is commented by the artist’s half-brother’s mother; Chapter 4 is commented by the artist’s brother.
To remain faithful to the family tradition in which photos are shown in albums or projected on the wall, the slides are filmed in the form of a diaporama.
Through the memories of this family, the project aims at documenting a very precise time that saw the emergence of blended families with more adventurous lifestyles and different types of education. The family represented in the artwork is composed by a father who shared his family life with three women with each of whom he had a child.
The peculiarity of these video is Haab’s desire to understand the life choices of each of the videos’ protagonists, the obstacles and misunderstandings that shape them. This research aims at documenting a family’s reality and giving the audience the opportunity to understand their lifestyle. Looking at the photos, the viewers can distinguish and identify themselves. Thanks to the narrator’s story, the audience can merge and feel involved in the lives and secrets he/she witnesses. A secret story of an era in which women in full emancipation must confront the patriarchy.
