Identity of a resident stranger
2016
Installation
Identity of a resident stranger is an installation consisting of a 2 x 3 m photograph, a text printed on paper and on an adhesive backing.
The viewer is invited to walk through the space that is visibly delimited by the text and the photo. In the passage a fiction is woven between past and present. The story is that of a male character recounting the story of a life spanning from childhood to the present day/adulthood. The only physical clue is the image, a staged photograph borrowed from an amateur photoghapher.
This fiction is woven from the reality of fifteen people from different European countries who, for professional reasons, are currently based in Berlin. When the life stories were collected the artist herself was in Berlin for an artist residency. The story shows an identity whose roots became unrecognisable. It’s a discourse that allows viewers to find themselves and identify with the main protagonist of the story.
